I don’t know if it’s just in my head, but it seems like my FB and Instagram have been flooded recently by a deluge of tired stereotypes and sweeping “car guy” generalizations. Here are my most cringe-inducing:
-Obsessively cleaning my car
-Cleaning my car
Exhilarating.
-Volvo wagons
Care Alert.
-Nurburgring times
-Quarter mile times
-0-60 times
-Time in general
-
-
-
-
-Bitching about how new cars have no soul/don’t look as nice/are heavier
Tell me more, please
-Brand rivalries
(Drives an Altima)
-Talking about cars you’ve never driven
-Models posing with cars
Ah yes, of course; the 1969 Le Mans winning Raptor
-Retro liveries
Don’t cut yourself on that edginess
- “No fucks given” cars
What are yours?

I’d go with the brand rivalries thing, especially with pickup trucks.
“Mine’s made of high strength steel, not pathetic aluminum - until the next generation comes out in a year or two, then aluminum will be awesome”
“My brand is the longest lasting on the road, by 0.356 years, ignoring the fact that all Ford and GM trucks are pretty damn durable when you think about it.”
“Mine tows more than yours. I’ve never actually towed with it, and don’t plan to, but, hey, it could tow more”.
“Mine doesn’t have those clever, useful features that yours has, because its a real truck. Until the next generation, when it incorporates those same features. Then they’ll be awesome.”
Also, manual elitism. I have the sneaking suspicion that the most intransigent ones on Internet forums are actually too young to even have a license.

I don’t give a fuck about “car guys” who hate on the Camry. Fast, sleek, sexy cars are awesome, but you know what is even more awesome? Not taking my car to the goddamn shop every three weeks. Reliability is the new Jalop.
Also, here’s my car, which will hopefully break the three-duds-in-a-row streak I’ve been on with vehicles I’ve purchased:

I like having a clean car, but I certainly don’t do it obsessively. I find self serve car washes to have the ideal mix of ease of use, with enough control not to damage paint and such pin my older cars.
I love Volvo wagons, but I’m sure why so many other people do...
I like looking at some times, like 0-60 gives a rough idea of how fun it would be to floor it from a traffic light. Nurburgring times can go to hell.
I’d rather talk about why I like old cars better than why I like new cars less. There are still lots of great things about new cars.
I hate brand rivalries with a burning passion. Few things make someone seem more of a petty child in my eyes.
Talking about driving characteristics of a car you’ve never driven is silly for obvious reasons. Retro liveries are silly (especially on that Raptor), no fucks given builds are generally dumb in the regard that they all seem to give a lot of fucks to make sure it looks like they don’t give any. I say a true “no fucks given” race car would be a $500 lemons racer.
And I hate models posing with cars.
Other things I find obnoxious is the attitude of choosing your car over a relationship and/or kids. It’s not too difficult to find someone to put up with your passion (unless you’re a complete douche of course). You can make time for kids and a hobby.

Having only one hand on the wheel placed directly at the top center.
Stretched tires in any fasion.
Peaple putting effort into making their car worse.(patina,”no fucks givin”)
Putting electrical tape over plasic or otherwise headlights.

For me it’s the whole ‘European cars are unreliable’, ‘British/French/German old cars have crap electrics’ (they are 25+ years old, how many cars have excellent electrics after 25 years?), the whole no non American can say anything bad about an American car without the standard ‘we saved your arses during the war or ‘U.S.A. FTW’ or the ‘U.S.A. U.S.A. U.S.A. (repeat for ages)‘, etc...
The Mustang jibes, the whole LS swap stuff, it has to be rear wheel drive or it’s wrong wheel drive stuff, etc...
I love cleaning cars but I’ve learned that not many others do it so I try not to go on about it so much.
We’ve all got our passions but we shouldn’t diss or put others down for theirs just because we don’t see what’s so great about it.

Quarter mile ETs. I just don’t care. Maybe it’s because I think stop light racing is boring and I prefer high speed spirited driving, but trap speed provides a much better representation of how a car will accelerate when you’re driving it for enjoyment on the road or on a track.
I’ll ask someone “what does it trap?” and they proudly recite an ET but can never remember what the car trapped. As if I’m supposed to know anything about what the car is like to drive based off it’s quarter mile ET alone...

For me, keeping my car clean, super cars, expensive cars ( I’m a cheap person, large price tags are stupid to me), and probably some other things I’m not thinking of.
Though, I do like that Volvo wagon pic. Not because of the Volvo, but because the wagon is a useful body style and I appreciate it. Plus the body itself is awkwardly boxy, which makes it different them many other cars today so I can appreciate it for that too. For me, I like different.

Time, especially 0-60.
F1/Nascar/... . Racing in general, racing with cars that aren’t at least somewhat close to factory specifically.
Offroading
Toyotas with more than 2 doors
American cars
Korean cars
21st century Japanese and German cars
Stance
Drift
Motor swapping a classic which already had a perfectly good factory engine available.

Wrenching on cars. I thought I’d like wrenching on cars. But I don’t.
I grew up in a woodworking household. My Dad was a carpenter and I spent summers helping him remodel kitchens, build bathrooms, and re-roof houses (God that was miserable). So I never wrenched on cars growing up. But I read everything I could about them. I read Hot Rod and Car Craft magazine. I knew the concepts behind most major mechanical systems in cars and I always thought to myself “One day I’ll have my own car to tune just the way I want”.
Well, one day I got my own car to wrench on. God I hated it. Frustrating, dirty, miserable.
Odd that after all those years fantasizing about hotrodding engines, swapping transmissions, upgrading suspensions, and after the torture of a simple fuel pump change I never wanted to wrench on cars again. I do still think of upgrading my car, but I always think of paying someone else to do it.
Kudos to you Oppos wrenching on your rides.

Supercars/Hypercars. I no longer get it.
Retro liveries are awesome, on the right vehicle.
Brand loyalty is fine, brand elitism really grinds my gear.
I’ll choose a manual when I can get it, but I wouldn’t take a vehicle out of consideration just because it’s not an option E.g. Lexus GS 350 F Sport is an awesome car.
